AAWARE (Approach Autism with Advocacy, Recovery & Education) was started in 2005 in Central Vermont as an autism parent support group. The group has gone through many changes since the initial meeting at Langdon St. Cafe in Montpelier when founders Claudia Pringles and Jessica Levi came up with the name of the group on the proverbial paper napkin. What has not changed is the need for more information regarding the state of autism and a place for parents to discuss concerns and celebrate triumphs.
Since our group was founded, we have had an online discussion board with Yahoo Groups. This new discussion board was launched in mid November of 2014 due to the need for an improved discussion board with more flexibility. Unlike the Yahoo board, people registered on this board will only get email notices if they wish. Urgent emails may be sent to registered participants on occasion (only by the Admin), but topic threads and responses will not automatically be emailed. To change any profile settings, including notifications, please click on "profile" on the bar below the logo, the "edit profile".
Another benefit of our new discussion board is the ability to have topics/boards which are open to the public and those which are only for parents who join in as members. However, we are not responsibility for any errors in the software or human errors which may reveal topics that are intended to be private. We also have no way of vetting everyone who joins this discussion board. We ask that anyone who posts to please be responsible with information that is posted.
Autism support groups are a very important way for parents to connect with others, network, form lifelong friendships and get information on what they need. The benefits of connecting with other parents are many. www.child-autism-parent-cafe.com/autism-support-groups.html
AAWARE has always been a positive and pro-active group with a slight bent towards advocacy, but we encourage all parents who would like to connect to join regardless of where they live or where their interests are. We've traditionally used the board to also alert families about what is happening in Vermont and offer tips on how to get better services for their kids. Many of the families on the AAWARE board learned about a pilot program called "C3", which was started about 6-7 years ago. These families were among the few who were able to get a budgeted amount for personal care services, but which also provides flexibility in the budget to purchase items or services for the child. Most recently, there have been some exciting changes in access to ABA and other therapies in the state. Developments are happening quickly! We encourage families who are interested in learning more to register. Knowledge is power.
